Gametogenesis

Good morning dear students.
Kindly first mark your attendance.

Today we will achieve the following learning outcomes:-
Students will be able to-
1. Define Gametogenesis.
2.Explain the process of Spermatogenesis.
3.Analyse & Interpretation the Hormonal Control of Spermatogenesis.
4.Draw & label the structure of a sperm.
5.Explain the process of Oogenesis.

Kindly write your notes in your register. I am available here to clear your doubts  , so do ask your valuable questions.

GAMETOGENESIS

It is defined as the process of production of Gametes.
SPERMATOGENESIS - process of production of sperm from Spermatogonia.
OOGENESIS - process of production of Ovum from Oogonia.

The process of Gametogenesis occurs in following basic steps :-
a. MULTIPLE mitotic divisions & cell growth of precursor germ cells.
b. TWO MEIOTIC division ( meiosis 1 & 2) to produce haploid daughter cells.
c. DIFFERENTIATION of the haploid daughter cells to produce functional gametes.

In this Blog we will discuss both the process in Details.

This link will help you understand the Spermatogenesis process in Seminiferous Tubules.

P. S. ACROSOME consists of Hydrolytic Enzymes called SPERM LYSIN. There are 3 types of sperm lysin :-

i. HYALURONIDASE - this hydrolysis hyaluronic acids of the Follicular cells.

ii. CORONA PENETRATING ENZYME - dissolvesthe corona radiata portion around the secondary oocyte by Hydrolysing their ground substances.

iii. ZONA LYSINE / ACROSIN- helps to digest the zona pellucida.

All this helps the sperm to reach the plasma membrane of the ovum.

This link will show you T. S of ovary with all the stages of OOGENESIS.

I will be also sending you a YouTube video link for better understanding of the process.

The Female Hormonal Control is a bit complicated which I will cover on 9th April according to Day 1 Time table.
Till then ask your doubts. These are very important parts of this chapter  for BOARD EXAMS.

  1. Good morning, ma'am
I had a doubt. In the diagram for sperm, it is mentioned that the cell has mitochondria. But we are told that only the mother is responsible for mitochondrial DNA. Does the mitochondria in the sperm not contribute to this?

    1. The mitochondria here helps them to get energy for swimming towards the egg cell. Here the head has the paternal DNA which meets the egg during fertilization
